The tip is what matter, a crappy tip is a the same as a crappy solder iron, then comes the heat transfer from the heating element to the tip, some cheap irons are very bad in this regard. You also need to maintain the tip by keeping it clean and always covered in solder, this is to insure a good thermal transfer from the tip to the thing you want to solder. A cheap Chinese Hakko knockoff solder station is cheap and tips are cheap too, so it is a good value for the money spend, one can use original Hakko tips on the Chinese thing too and they last longer than Chinese tips do. Tips need to be covered with a protective coating to extend their life, the issue is that flux (you add or it is in the solder) will over time eat the copper, so if the tip is copper then it will change shape over time because the copper simply are disappearing, but this protective coating on the tips comes with a drawback, if (when) there eventually will come a hole in the coating then the copper inside the tip will simply disappear slowly and you will feel like there is not enough heat to do the soldering job. All this just to say, keep some spare tips on hand, you will need them sooner or later. Another tip killer is if the solder iron is standing turned on and otherwise unused for a longer time span then the tip coating can go bad and you are unable to make it accept solder at all, then there is tip cleaner or mechanically removing the outer layer of the tip, but that can also create the unwanted hole on the coating, yes, nothing comes free. The best soldering iron to repair audio leads is useless if the iron is not in good working condition included a usable tip, and you need to have the skills to do the soldering too.

I might add for inexperienced & potentially excited enthusiasts who may seek to export some these techniques to other applications , it should be noted for beginners that using the passive DI box backwards, as is done here, turns a low impedance line signal into a ‘Hot’ amplified signal (the reverse of what a DI box is typically designed for) - Don’t reverse a DI box without due consideration and precaution. 😊 Additionally, of the three methods described here, people might be interested in learning how to get the best quality audio from a venue mixer / sound system. Unfortunately budget (cheap) DI Boxes have poor quality transformers- they will degrade sound quality. If you we’re prepared to spend extra, you could get a DI specifically designed for the purpose of taking audio ‘out’ (and not using a guitar/keyboard DI box backwards) Unfortunately, a high quality transformer DI can run into hundreds of dollars for something that will preserve HQ sound. In the scenario featured in this UA-cam, a DI box is completely unnecessary unless a very long cable run from the transmitter to the mixing desk is required. The alternate option suggested here is an ‘RCA’ cable mated to a TRS ‘Line’ attenuated cable - RCA & LINE outputs host different electrical metrics which presents impedance mis-match issues when simply adapted in this way - the difference between JACK LINE & RCA is more than the shape of plugs and sockets and ideally would be first electrically converted to one standard or the other for best audio. Of the three suggested connectivity tips, and options are not limited (as they sometimes can be with venue systems) and High fidelity sound is the goal, then the preferred option for ‘best quality audio’ is to take audio from the mixers TRS or XLR line outs (called Monitor, AUX , Aux (mono)send etc) directly connected to the attenuation cable., which incidentally is actually what this cable is made for - no other devices required. You could of course take either of the mixers Left or Right main OUTPUTS via attenuation cable, however audio would only be mono, but fine for centred vocals. All this advice is subject to recommendations from respective Brand names - not all these Camera transmitter s / receiver s operate technically identically - check with manufacturer first. Just because something works a few times, does not mean it is safe for the indefinite duration- slowly occurring damage can be resulting.

G’day Gary. Another Gem. I just stumbled upon your channel and it’s one that many presenters need to emulate. For instance, it’s so refreshing not to be subjected to the cringeworthy but oh so common ‘What’s Up UA-cam’ intro that may presenters consider clever. It ain’t! That intro usually prompts me to immediately move on and avoid that channel. Yes…….I’m picky! Back to the subject at hand……I’m using an H4N Pro but much of the info you kindly provided is applicable.
